Vista Mundo: Conversation Schedule

15th December/ Sunday

4:00 - 6:00 pm: Formal Opening - Azulejo (at Instituto Camões, Casa Basilo Dias)

An historic exhibition featuring 25 brilliant Goa-based artists under the age of 40 years, who first came together in June at the lovely heritage headquarters of Instituto Camões (IC) at the Casa Basilio Dias on the Panjim waterfront, to study and learn about the iconic Islamic-Iberian ceramic tile-work that has spread in innumerable beautiful manifestations all over the world. Their work spans performance and installation to painting and digital art, and authoritatively shifts the global centre of gravity for this international art form towards Panjim, the former capital of the 450-year-old Estado da India Portuguesa.

17th December / Tuesday
4:00 pm: Introduction - Aruna D'Souza

Aruna D'Souza writes about modern and contemporary art; intersectional feminisms and other forms of politics; and how museums shape our views of each other and the world. Her most recent book Whitewalling: Art, Race, and Protest in 3 Acts (Badlands Unlimited 2018) was named one of the best art books of 2018 by the New York Times.

5:00 pm: Introduction - Amruta Patil

Writer-painter Amruta Patil is the author of graphic novels Kari (2008); the Mahabharat and Purana-based Parva duology, Adi Parva: Churning of the Ocean (2012) and Sauptik: Blood and Flowers (2016); and Aranyaka: Book of the Forest (2019). Her Serendipity Arts Festival 2019, entitled Altar, is also her exhibition debut, as well as a profound homecoming because she was raised and went to school and art college in Goa.

18th December / Wednesday
4:00 pm: Introduction - Sergio Santimano

Sergio Santimano was born in Lourenço Marques, now Maputo, Mozambique in 1956 and works in documentary and reportage photography. He is widely regarded one of the major photographers and artists from his generation in East Africa. Some years ago, he began to re-engage with his ancestral roots in Goa, which is the subject of his Serendipity Arts Festival 2019 exhibition: O Retorno (The Return)

5:00 pm: Introduction - Antonio E Costa

Antonio E Costa is an extraordinary transnational artist who has lived, painted, and exhibited to great acclaim all over the world. His works in mixed media, on canvas and paper, over several decades and many periods of transition, have gained a universal reality beyond their visual presence. E Costa’s training in fine arts, architecture and urban design, has widened the scope of his vision to encompass environmental design and woodwork in many countries. Beyond Boundaries, his Serendipity Arts Festival 2019 exhibition, marks the first major retrospective of this supremely skilled abstract artist and sculptor.

11:00 am: Itinerant Sex: Goa’s Other Worlds - Anjali Arondekar

This talk engages the emergence of a devadasi collectivity in colonial Goa, the Gomantak Maratha Samaj, to pose two crucial questions: (1) How do histories of sexuality trouble the more routinized passages through which Goan history has been written and celebrated? (2) How can the Samaj's archive of profit and pleasure call attention to itinerant caste forms, and the politics of region they leave behind?

4:00 pm: Forever on the Road: Sergio Santimano and Antonio E Costa
5:00 pm: Brownish – South Asian Artists in-between Black and White America: Aruna D'Souza and Brendan Fernandes
