Beneath the concrete skies lie rural villages where farming was the way of life. Over the years, rice fields have been taken over for other purposes. Highways have been built over once thriving agricultural lands. As a farmer, Tinu Verghis cultivates her land with seasonal crops. As the years pass, she is starkly aware of the changes in the weather pattern, which affect the planting and harvesting season. Excessive pollution has accelerated climate change; monsoon has been arriving late over the years. Excessive rain/ high temperature/ sudden droughts, etc influences not only the growth duration and but also the growth pattern and productivity of the rice crops. Fifteen years ago, she was harvesting approximately 1000 kg of rice from a little more than half acre of land. Last year she harvested 600 kg of rice. For this years’ Serendipity Arts Festival, the medium for the artwork she has chosen is in relation to the sentiments and experiences of her life as a farmer. The Old Goa Institute of Management as the site of this performance allows for an alternative viewing experience of the paddy. Verghese is interested in performing with her entire season’s harvest of paddy, which will be presented as an installation outside of her performance, during the entirety of the festival. Through the role of performance art, Land is a state subject and state governments consider only people with a land-title as ‘farmer’. 85% of women farmers are not recognised by the country as ‘farmers’ because patriarchal norms oppose the inheritance of land to women, leaving women unable to access benefits and rights. These women constitute about 65% of the total agricultural workforce in the country. Verghese is interested in reflecting on the voiceless female bodies as ‘cultivators’ of the land.
