CALL TO DISORDER: EXPERIMENTS IN PRACTICE AND RESEARCH

Special Project Curator: Vidya Shivadas

Call to Disorder is an outcome of the annual courses conducted by Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art, in collaboration with Serendipity Arts Foundation, over the past three years. The intensive programmes were geared towards young artists who are looking to closely engage with experienced practitioners, and explore diverse mediums and materials.

The exhibition at Serendipity Arts Festival in 2019 will showcase experiences gathered by the participants of participating in these mentor-led, and equally, peer-learning courses. It will create conditions in which we may think of thematic questions that emerged from these exercises of considering what constitutes practice and research and the role of the artist itself in the present times.

The title of the exhibition is taken from Fred Moten and Steven Harney’s radical reformulation of education in the book The Undercommons: Fugitive Planning & Black Study. The ‘call to dis-order’ is how they envision learning today which is geared towards dissonance and which 'refuses order as the distinction between noise and music, chatter and knowledge, pain and truth'.

The exhibition will explore ideas of process, collectivity, knowledge production and artistic research. This environment that reflects on art education also asks us to in turn, reflect on what we might learn from art practices. It offers an opportunity to speak of what contemporary art enables. Through the works of young practitioners, it will help us examine the creative, critical and affective spaces art provides and how they helps us think, feel and act.
