ALTAR – MUNDO GOA

Special Project Curator: Vivek Menezes

India’s first female graphic novelist is also one of the world’s most painterly. Amruta Patil’s gorgeous books are studded throughout with gorgeous artworks, including sly quotations and tributes to her favourite artists from across genres, continents and art history. This unique retrospective presentation of drawing and paintings representing all the various stages of her career marks her festival debut, made even more meaningful because it takes place where she grew up and earned her first degree (at Goa College of Art just up the hill from the Serendipity Arts Festival venues). This artist says her world is her desk, which she has been compelled to ritually recreate in different locations in various homes in India and France, in very specific ways that evoke her particular universe of meaning. This ‘moveable altar’ (the inspiration comes from an iconic Hemingway book about his own working life in Paris) takes shape anew in the storied Institute Menezes Braganza in Panjim as installation, archive, exhibition of paintings and performance.
