O RETORNO – MUNDO GOA

Special Project Curator: Vivek Menezes

In the middle of the last century, at least 200,000 Goans lived in both British and Portuguese colonial East Africa, with the largest concentrations in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Angola and Mozambique. With decolonization came wrenching exodus, with many seeking refuge in the West while others scattered back to India. Some stayed, including Sérgio Santimano, who remained in his beloved Mozambique, where he became one of the regions most respected and acclaimed photographers. Though marriage eventually relocated him to Sweden, he remained an essential part of the arts scene in the country of his birth, until a few years ago when he decided to explore his ancestral roots in Colva, the iconic beachfront village of South Goa. The images he made on that exploration are being shown in India for the first time.
